Who is Bella Freud?

Who is Bella Freud?

Bella Freud was established in the year 1990 by fashion designer Bella Freud. Freud honed her craft through working with Vivienne Westwood throughout the 1980’s as her personal assistant, before setting up her own label years later. Freud is enchanted by people; and shares her great grandfather Sigmund Freud’s beliefs that all people possess unconscious thoughts, feelings, desires, and memories. This spontaneity of the human condition is reflected in the rebellious design of her clothes.

Bella Freud is famous for her classic knits and t-shirts graffitied with tongue-in-cheek slogans. Her clothes are full of personality and heart, each design has a story or wider meaning. A piece from last season’s collection featured designs with the words ‘Ginsberg is God’ at the front, and on the back read ‘Godard is Dog’. This particular concept came about because of Freud’s assistant, who made the malapropism ‘Godard is Dog’ out of the original slogan. Freud liked it so much that she incorporated it onto the back of her design. One of her most recognisable designs is perhaps the iconic 1970 jumpers. This concept was born when Freud noticed the date in the corner of a catalogue – the year conjured images of the early New York punk scene and Patti Smith that inspired her greatly. Freud has always distilled emotion and storytelling into every statement or design she’s crafted.

Throughout her career, Freud has had a multitude of muses that have inspired her designs. Perhaps one of the most notable being supermodel Kate Moss, who she first met in the early 90’s at the height of her stardom. Bella Freud was captivated by Kate, not just in her beauty but her aura of being. After spending some time with Moss both privately and professionally, Freud said she felt she had been well and truly ‘mossed’, coining this unique term to describe in tangible explanation her fascination with the supermodel.

What we find most distinctive about Bella Freud as a brand, is that their clothes are ageless, and genderless with no expiration date. A classic 1970 jumper for example, will stay in your wardrobe for season after season, never going out of style. We are proud to be one of the only Yorkshire stockists of Bella Freud, and wait with anticipation to see the next steps for a brand that is such a loud and steadfast piece of the British Fashion Industry.
