Citizens of Humanity – How the fashion giant is stepping into a greener future

Citizens of Humanity – How the fashion giant is stepping into a greener future

“As we celebrate 20 years, we no longer want to just sustain or focus on the past. We want to look forward and be focused on regeneration, whether it’s farms or society or the treatment of our teams. Striving to make things better.”AMY WILLIAMS CITIZENS OF HUMANITY CEO

The Citizens of Humanity Group will be introducing Regenerative Cotton into the Citizens of Humanity and AGOLDE collections as soon as September 2023, with Kiss the Ground Cotton integrating into all collections January of 2024.

This programme was concepted to allow Citizens of Humanity to understand exactly where all their cotton is coming from. Growing cotton is one of the most intensive and soil degrading systems of agriculture, which means for future-proofing purposes the company wanted the knowledge and certainty that their cotton was regeneratively farmed in both a socially and environmentally responsible manner, done with practices that help to revive our soil and atmosphere.

Citizens of Humanity Group and Kiss The Ground Cotton has partnered with 10 farms across the US to procure over a million pounds of cotton – enough to make roughly 500,000 pairs of jeans. But how exactly does it help the environment? See below…

  • Leads to an increased soil organic matter and biodiversity.
  • Healthier and more productive soil that is drought- and flood-resilient.
  • Decreased use of chemical inputs and subsequent pollution.
  • Cleaner air and water.
  • Enhanced wildlife habitat.
  • Carbon captured in the soil to combat climate variability.

But how is Regeneration Agriculture different from Organic Farming?

The answer is: it’s very different! Regenerative agriculture can reverse the effects of climate change while increasing soil fertility and improving human health. In addition, it reduces carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and grows organic matter in the soil by sequestering carbon through increasing photosynthesis. Conventional farming incorporates harmful practices, like chemical inputs, minimal to no animal grazing and more. These practices strip our soil of living roots and essential nutrients, reducing organic matter, biodiversity, and water-holding capacity. These effects make our soil more vulnerable to flood, drought, and erosion.

We are huge advocates of re-wearing and recycling. Investing in denim from brands like Citizens of Humanity and Agolde is a great way in which you can do your little bit to help the planet: through buying quality, not quantity. Buying a sustainably sourced pair of jeans that will last you for years and seasons to come is a much greener choice than buying into damaging fast fashion products. Not only is the Citizens of Humanity Group investing both time and funds into growing environmentally friendly cotton, but also into taking better care of their workforce.

We are so excited to see brands like Citizens of Humanity Group taking huge steps to securing a brighter future for our planet. Browse our denim collections from Citizens of Humanity and Agolde and support the movement towards a greener fashion industry.
